DETROIT Mazda North American Operations told employees in an internal memo today that president and chief executive officer Charlie Hughes would step down effective Saturday.

A representative for the Irvine, Calif.-based automaker said no reason was given for Hughes’ departure and he would not speculate about where the executive is going.
