Mason Joins Zipatoni

Former Simon Exec to Head Chicago Office
CHICAGO–Citing the account services and creative jobs on his rƒsumƒ as key to its decision, Zipatoni has tapped veteran promotional marketing executive Rodney Mason to head its new Chicago office.
Mason comes from promotions shop Simon-Chicago, where he was senior vice president of creative services and worked on clients including McDonald’s, Blockbuster and Chevron.
His first tasks at Zipatoni will be to hire a staff and win new business, said Jim Holbrook, president of the St. Louis-headquartered promotions agency. Zipatoni’s expansion to Chicago is part of a larger scheme to increase the shop’s capabilities in disciplines including retail store design and product development.
Mason is interviewing creative directors, senior writers and senior account executives to find the core of the new office, Holbrook said. The agency plans to have a staff of 20 here by year’s end.
Before joining Simon, Mason worked at The Marketing Continuum in Dallas, first as vice president of creative and later as vice president of account service. His experience there included work for brewer Labatt USA, which may prove useful to Zipatoni, whose largest client is Miller Brewing. Zipatoni continues to handle Miller out of St. Louis, but Holbrook said Mason’s beer experience is “more of a fit issue.”
The agency’s original plan was to have its Chicago office managed by a creative director and an account supervisor, but with Mason, “We have done both,” Holbrook said.
Mason said he plans to name account and creative directors for the office. Moving to Chicago opens Zipatoni to a greater talent base and more national clients, he said.
Separately, Zipatoni in St. Louis acquired digital design shop Schwa, which will be folded into Zipatoni Interactive.
