Do you suppose people carpool as they drive around to find cheaper gas? Actually, gas is less expensive now than a year ago. But people feel it’s pricier, and act accordingly. The chart here, excerpting a poll fielded for the Wall Street Journal Online by Harris Interactive, shows how behavior is shifting. There’s relatively little variation among different income groups. For instance, 57 percent of the $75,000-plus cohort said they’ve reduced non-critical travel, as did 60 percent of those making less than $35,000.
