Luckie Hires Top CD

Luckie & Co. has recruited WestWayne’s Martin Buchanan to succeed the retiring Leo Wright as executive creative director.
Buchanan, 43, was creative director at WestWayne in Tampa, Fla., leading the Salem cigarettes, Publix Supermarkets and Roadhouse Grill accounts. He returns to the Birmingham, Ala., shop where he served two tours of duty as a junior and later senior art director in the 1980s.
Executive vice president Tom Luckie said that 30-year veteran Wright, 63, told management he wanted to retire in 2000. “We’d had some conversations with Martin over the years, nothing specific,” said Luckie. “As we looked around internally and externally, we came to realize Martin was the right guy.”
Buchanan officially joins the agency March 27. He will serve on the executive board as part of the four-man team directing agency operations, along with Luckie, president Robert Luckie III and executive vice president Ed Mizzel.
Buchanan’s agency work experience also includes stints at Backer Spielvogel Bates in New York and D’Arcy Masius Benton & Bowles in St. Louis.
Buchanan said he remained “at WestWayne a little longer than originally planned. . . to stay through the [successful] Sports Authority pitch. It was great to go out on a high note.”
“We are sad for us but happy for Martin,” said Leanne Hand, WestWayne’s executive vice president of public relations.
Hand said the agency is currently conducting a creative personnel search and “would love to hear from interested candidates.” K
