Lottery, Sears Perking Up O&M

State Awards $18 Mil.; Auto Group Returns
CHICAGO–With a lottery win and Sears Auto Group back in the fold, Ogilvy & Mather had plenty to cheer at its annual meeting last week.
The Chicago shop bested DDB and J. Walter Thompson, both Chicago, to land the $18 million Illinois Lottery account. The incumbent, Foote, Cone & Belding, Chicago, did not participate in the review.
Cathy Beres, client deputy director, said O&M was chosen because of its creative idea. She declined to elaborate, but said it should lead to a campaign by February.
“It’s a very different direction for them,” said O&M managing director Linda Garrison.
Select games will be touted within an overarching theme, Beres said.
Separately, sources said O&M is again handling Sears Auto Group.
Sears had contracted Carmichael Lynch, Minneapolis, in mid-August for a project for the auto group focusing on tire sales. One spot featured a mouse using a tire as an exercise wheel. The campaign carried Sears’ new tagline, “The good life at a great price. Guaranteed.”
Carmichael’s strongest supporter at the client, Bob Thacker, has since left to become president of BBDO Minneapolis. Still, it is possible Carmichael could be call upon for other projects, sources said. –with Trevor Jensen and Aaron Baar
