The issue of diversity in our industry—meaning, the profound lack of it—is complex, and, with a few notable exceptions, runs deep and wide historically, currently and emotionally.

What my column painfully lacked was an overt recognition of the problem. I do not for one minute imagine this problem doesn’t exist. My intentions with the column were simple and twofold: to urge minorities—the ones who still feel they’re being excluded from this predominantly white business, and want in—to take advantage of the demands of the recent HRC agreement signed by some 11 general market agencies, and come bang on our doors.
