Leslie Adds McDermott as CD

The Leslie Agency has hired John McDermott as creative director to replace Russ Corvey, who left the Greenville, S.C. shop a year ago. McDermott will report to Jim Farmer, who has been promoted to executive creative director.

Agency president and chief executive officer, Carlos Jimenez said new-business acquisitions and growth among existing accounts caused him to increase the leadership in the shop’s creative department.

McDermott was recruited from Bcom3’s D’Arcy Masius Benton & Bowles in St. Louis, where he was a senior vice president and group cd.

“We felt like we needed new spunk,” Farmer said. “We’ve grown so much that managing the staff is a day full.”

At D’Arcy, McDermott, a copywriter, worked on accounts such as Anheuser-Busch, Uncle Ben’s and Coca-Cola’s Nascar promotions.

McDermott said his Nascar work gave him an understanding of the importance of loyal consumers. “Seventy percent of their fans say they will purchase a Nascar-sponsored product over any other,” he said. “They understand that without [fans’] loyalty, their sport wouldn’t be where it is today.”

He hopes to parlay that experience with Leslie clients Mayfield Dairy Farms and Extended Stay America.
