Landmarks Trip the Light Fantastic

New York light show company ArtLumiere has teamed with independent Horizon Media to create an outdoor ad campaign that starting today will bathe three landmark buildings in the U.S. — New York’s Grand Central Station, Washington’s Union Station and the Beverly Wilshire hotel in Los Angeles — with images highlighting client History Channel’s upcoming new series America the Story of Us.

Horizon said it was the first time that ArtLumiere has used its large format projection technique to create a national brand campaign.

The hand-painted light projections will depict iconic images from American history, including a log cabin, a modern cityscape and a scene of buffalo roaming the Great Plains. Messaging will remind viewers to tune in at 9 p.m. Sundays on the History Channel. The series kicks off April 25.

The outdoor campaign is just one facet of the network’s promotion for the series, which also included broadcast, cable, radio and print spots. History also created a massive educational tie-in, with grants being given to schools and institutions across the country. The complete series is also being made available free of charge to every school and accredited college in the U.S.

Horizon also negotiated a unique deal with MSN that will give the series a three-screen takeover, including Web, mobile and Xbox Live. There’s also a cinema campaign and a tie-in to online music service Pandora, which is developing a permanent patriotic-themed channel celebrating iconic American music and artists.
