In October 2020, grocery retailer Kroger released an AI-powered digital assistant called Chefbot to help customers figure out what to do with the ingredients in their refrigerators and pantries before they go bad.

That’s in part because Kroger data shows the average customer wastes 500 pounds of food—totaling $1,800—every year.

About six months after Chefbot’s launch, Kroger and its creative and media agency 360i gave an update on the “cute AI” at Adweek’s 2021 Elevate: AI event.

Recipe inspiration meets food waste reduction

Abbey Klaassen, president at 360i, described Chefbot as “a pantry maximizer,” “a food waste mitigator” and a “‘what should I cook tonight?’ coach.”
