Ryan, 40, will join the WPP Group agency on Jan. 1 and report to North American president Bob Jeffrey, who becomes worldwide chief executive next year.

The post has been vacant since early 2001, when Jeffrey advanced to oversee North America. Jeffrey, 50, had been talking to candidates for the slot since January.
