JWT New York Names Waxman-Arteta New CMO

New chief comes from client services

JWT is shaking up its new business ranks after an arid stretch of relatively few wins.

Beth Waxman-Arteta, co-president of client services, has assumed the role of chief marketing officer for the New York office. She succeeds Lee Davis, though Davis had a different title: new business director.

The move represents a career shift for Waxman-Artetaa, a veteran account handler. That said, at JWT she played an integral role in past wins, including Microsoft’s Bing and business-to-business accounts and Macy’s

Waxman-Arteta assumed the co-president of client services role in November, along with John Baker. Baker also is shifting to a new role.

All New York account chiefs will now report to North American CEO David Eastman. As such, the president of client services title will dissolve, though Eastman will likely name an insider to manage the department day-to-day.

Davis had led new business efforts since January 2010. Before that, he was a group account director at Wieden + Kennedy in New York, where he worked on Delta Air Lines.  

JWT’s wins this year have been modest. The WPP Group shop won Nestlé’s Lean Cuisine creative account in March and Energizer’s digital creative business last month. The agency was unable to crack into bigger contests, however, including Burger King’s creative review.  

At the same time, the shop flushed most of its Microsoft business, with the latest hits being its Bing and Office assignments.
