Job Growth

A Labor Department report showing employment gains in February helped firm up a fluctuating market last week. The report issued on Friday showed that the economy added 243,000 jobs for the month, while relaying just enough news—wages were up only 0.3 percent and the unemployment rate rose from 4.7 percent to 4.8 percent—to allay fears that the Federal Reserve might hike interest rates. With the news, the Dow finished the week higher, closing up 53.47 points at 11,076.34, a 0.5 percent gain. The Nasdaq, however, finished lower, dropping 2 percent to close at 2,262.04, down 44.62 points. Ad stocks were also mixed. Omnicom closed at 81.60, up 1.04 points, a 1.2 percent increase. WPP Group also finished higher, closing up 0.4 percent at 59.68, a gain of 0.27 points. But Interpublic Group dropped 0.14 points, to close at 10.10, an 9.8 percent decline.
