JibJab Animates Bud Mascots Online

CHICAGO Viral marketing company JibJab has produced its first work for Anheuser-Busch, an animated short featuring the Budweiser Lizards and the Clydesdales that mocks mixed drinks and wine.

The Santa Monica, Calif.-based JibJab, best known for its “This Land” parody during last year’s presidential election, was hired to build the St. Louis brewery’s viral marketing presence, the brewer said. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Creative content produced by JibJab could wind up on TV as well as online, an A-B representative said. The initial effort, as well as subsequent work for the company, is on JibJab.com and Budweiser.com.

Brothers Gregg and Evan Spiridellis launched JibJab in 1999. It does commercial work to “fund original content” such as the “This Land” piece, which featured animated versions of President George W. Bush and his Democratic challenger, Sen. John Kerry, singing a parody version of Woody Guthrie’s “This Land Is Your Land.”

JibJab has completed viral marketing campaigns for Kraft, Sony, and the History Channel, Gregg Spiridellis said. The Sony work was expanded to print, packaging and TV.

The deal with A-B “calls for developing creative content” for the brewery, Gregg Spiridellis said. While not an advertising agency, JibJab could see its concepts through to TV, he said. “We’re not producing creative that can be taken away” and given to another agency, he said.

JibJab has 550,000 newsletter subscribers, who receive and then can forward the company’s work through the Internet. Sponsored work, such as that for A-B, is flagged to subscribers, Gregg Spiridellis said.
