The opulent train was made famous by Agatha Christie’s Murder on the Orient Express. Recent movies based on that 1934 novel have helped maintain that rail service’s rarefied air of classic luxury with hints of diabolical mystery.

A single ticket from London to Venice goes for £2,650 (about $3,660). A six-day journey from Paris to Istanbul will run you £15,000 (about $20,722). At those prices, it’s no surprise that the passenger manifest has included the likes of Angelina Jolie, Pharrell Williams and Kate Moss, who last year threw a birthday party for her hairdresser on board.
