Chase Contacts at Least 5 Shops In $300 Mil. Media Review

Los Angeles At least five agencies have received RFPs from JP Morgan Chase & Co. for its estimated $300 million media review, sources said. The client, which launched the review this month following its merger with Bank One, has contacted the New York offices of Aegis’ Carat, the Bank One incumbent; IPG’s Initiative, which handled some buying for Chase; Publicis’ Zenith and Optimedia; and Havas’ MPG. Credentials meetings are scheduled for this week in New York; a decision date could not be determined. Neither the client nor the agencies were available for comment.

Pier 1 Eliminates Holiday TV Ads; Broadcast to Resume in 2005

DALLAS Citing declining profits, Pier 1 last week said it would cut fourth-quarter broadcast ads in favor of print, direct marketing and e-commerce to promote holiday sales. TV spots will resume in 2005 once new shops are in place, the client said. Pier 1 last week briefed five creative finalists for its $60 million account, sources said. They are IPG’s Deutsch, Publicis’ Fallon and independent Laird + Partners, all in New York; Publicis & Hal Riney in San Francisco; and Dallas independent The Loomis Agency. IPG’s Initiative and WPP’s MindShare, both in New York, are vying for media duties, sources said. Creative and media had been with IPG’s Campbell-Ewald in Warren, Mich.

American Legacy Targets Adult Smokers With Profile Campaign

WASHINGTON The American Legacy Foundation launches a campaign by GSD&M in Austin, Texas, next Monday that aims to get adults to stop smoking. The campaign, called “Mary Quits,” follows a woman as she struggles to quit. The work, part of the $18 million Legacy spends each year on adult-smoking cessation, includes two TV ads that seek to drive viewers online, where they can watch reality-style videos of Mary’s efforts.

Ailing Lego Launches Review For $30 Mil. U.S. Media Work

CHICAGO Worldwide financial woes prompted The Lego Co. to contact three shops regarding its $30 million U.S. media account, the client said. Sources said Lego contacted IPG’s Universal McCann, WPP’s Mediaedge:cia and independent Carat, all in New York. UM declined to participate for undisclosed reasons. Mediaedge, which handles some Lego work in Europe, is conflicted due to Mattel’s $275 million U.S account. The incumbent, Publicis’ Starcom in Chicago, is defending; the process is closed to further entrants, the client said.

Shops Pitch Ideas This Week On How to Make Coke Iconic

Agencies will present ideas on how to reinvigorate Coke Classic this week in Atlanta, sources said. The client contacted shops about an international assignment for Coke, but the winning idea could run in North America, sources said. Shops expected to present include Publicis and IPG’s McCann Erickson, both in New York, and IPG siblings Campbell-Ewald in Warren, Mich., and The Martin Agency in Richmond, Va. WPP’s Berlin Cameron/Red Cell, which handles Coke in North America, is also presenting, sources said. Coke declined comment.
