Boston McDonald’s Franchisees Start Search

CHICAGO—The McDonald’s franchisee group of Boston is launching a review for its estimated $15-20 million advertising account, which for the past two years has been with Leo Burnett and its Starcom unit for creative and media, respectively, sources said. The group represents about 300 restaurants throughout the region and moved to Chicago-based Burnett and Starcom from Arnold in Boston, following a review. Burnett and DDB both work on the national McDonald’s account. Arnold handles the chain’s metropolitan New York co-op, among others. Agency and client executives either could not be reached or declined comment.

Arnold, EPB Still in Talks for New York

BOSTON—Arnold and Panoramic Communications’ Earle Palmer Brown remained in talks late last week in an effort to place some staffers and clients of the latter’s New York office with Arnold, sources said. DeLonghi kitchen appliances, which spends about $5 million annually on ads, according to CMR, is most likely to make the move, sources said. Lance Mald, CEO of EPB in New York, declined comment, as did a client representative. Arnold chairman Ed Eskandarian did not return calls by press time. EPB’s New York outpost has about 25-30 remaining employees, sources said, and a handful of clients, including DeLonghi, the SSB Citi unit of Citi Group, and the Accor hotels chain. Last week, Havas’ Arnold absorbed most of the staff and clients of EPB in Bethesda, Md., which will soon close. Terms were not disclosed, but sources pegged the price tag at less than $5 million in cash and stock. About $40 million in business from clients such as the American Bankers Association and the U.S. Treasury, as well as 30 EPB employees, joined Arnold’s office in McLean, Va. EPB also maintains a small service office in Philadelphia. Panoramic, which has been shedding its units all year through sales and buybacks, has no other holdings.

Carat Hires Cleary, Promotes Moore

BOSTON—Carat Business & Technology Group has named Martha Cleary a media director. She will report to Jane Deery, evp, managing director of the Boston company. Cleary brings more than two decades of experience in consumer and business-to-business, and has had stints at Mullen in Wenham, Mass.; Lord, Geller, Federico, Einstein in New York; and Stackpole & Partners. GM Credit Card, Timberland and Oxygen Media are among the clients with which she has worked. Additionally, Tory Moore has been promoted to a media-director post. She will oversee strategic planning and the pursuit of new-business prospects for the agency. Prior to joining Carat in 1999, Moore was at Arnold, working on FleetBoston Financial and Stop & Shop.

Sheaff Dorman Purins Creates New BJ’s Work

BOSTON—Sheaff Dorman Purins, a Needham, Mass., marketing shop, has completed its 2001 annual report for BJ’s Wholesale Club. The report, which features shots of the store’s interiors, takes the viewer on a tour of the typical BJ’s location. Partners & Simons in Boston handles advertising for the Natick, Mass., discount-store chain.
