Initiative Withdraws From Sun Media Review

NEW YORK—Interpublic Group’s Initiative Media North America has pulled out of Sun Microsystems’ $100 million global media consolidation, both companies confirmed. Initiative has handled a piece of Sun’s business for four years. “We feel that we’ve done good work for them in the past, but their business seems to be moving in another direction, so we decided not to continue into the next round,” said an Initiative representative, declining to elaborate on Sun’s apparently new course. Still contending are Aegis’ Carat and WPP’s Mediaedge:cia, both New York, and Bcom3’s Starcom, Chicago. Presentations are set for the week of April 15.

FCB’s Harrington to Lead Taco Bell Account

LOS ANGELES—Foote, Cone & Belding has shuffled management on its $200 million Taco Bell account, confirmed FCB Southern California president Jim Harrington, who will now lead the business from Irvine, Calif. He replaces account director Greg Sieck, who departed FCB San Francisco about a month ago. Harrington said the move was not due to Sieck’s departure. “We are taking steps to leverage the resources of both our West Coast offices to meet Taco Bell’s needs,” he said. The team also includes svp, group account director Heidi Roberts, who has joined FCB San Francisco from crosstown shop Goodby, Silverstein & Partners. Tom O’Keefe will continue to lead creative out of San Francisco. Greg Bayle will continue to work on the regional Taco Bell business out of Irvine.

Thomsen Named Wunderman SVP, Practice Leader

LOS ANGELES—Cindy Thomsen has been named svp, direct marketing practice leader for the Y&R Cos., Irvine, Calif. She had been a freelance planner for Y&R for a year. Before that, she was vp, account director at Deutsch/LA in Marina del Rey, Calif., where she worked on Mitsubishi Motors, and Thomsen reports to Wunderman managing director Laurie Null and will oversee planning, analytics, data management, mail operations and print production.

Coors Unveils New Work From FCB

CHICAGO—New ads for Coors Brewing were shown to distributors last week. The Golden, Colo., brewery’s chief marketing officer Ron Askew, who took the post last year, had demanded and received a new lineup of work from lead agency Foote, Cone & Belding in Chicago. FCB’s work for Coors Light is tagged, “Rock on,” and positions the beer as the octane for high-energy socializing. The creative is party shots and music from artists such as the Barenaked Ladies and Dr. Dre. Work for Coors Original positions it as the beer for a “Guys night out,” and features stars that include Charles Barkley and Kid Rock.

Magnet Communications Moves Into Arnold Digs

SAN FRANCISCO—Public relations design company Magnet Communications has moved into the offices of Arnold at 555 Post Street in San Francisco. The space was formerly occupied by the San Francisco Press Club. Both Magnet and Arnold are owned by Havas. The move allows the entities to provide clients with fully integrated communications services, the shops said.
