Wachovia Taps Erwin-Penland for Retail Work

ATLANTA—Wachovia Corp. has hired Erwin-Penland to support its in-house creative services group. The Greenville, S.C., shop had been working with First Union Corp., which merged with Wachovia last year. The assignment involves retail print ads, point-of-sale materials, direct mail, and sports sponsorships and promotions. Billings are undisclosed. There was no review.

HDC Promotes Sea & Ski’s Sun Protection

ATLANTA—Sea & Ski targets moms with a message about the damaging effects of sun exposure in a national print and radio campaign that launches next month. The work, via Harris Drury Cohen in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., balances warnings with humorous images. The$2 million campaign expands the use of Sea & Ski’s tagline, “The ultimate in protection.”

Salvation Army Readies TV, Radio Campaign

ATLANTA—The Salvation Army is set to release two television and radio spots by Bennett Kuhn Varner. The campaign features actress Dixie Carter speaking on behalf of the nonprofit’s charitable gift annuity program. The ads will be tested in Southern markets from March 25-April 7. BKV is located in Atlanta.

The Work Group Gets Remington’s Drinkables

DALLAS—Remington Health Products has selected The Work Group Advertising and Design to help introduce its Drinkables nutritional supplements. The Fort Worth, Texas-based agency will promote the spring launch of the product line in groceries, pharmacies and outlet stores nationwide. Barkin Communications, also located in Fort Worth, will provide public relations support. Campaign spending was not disclosed.

Pizza Hut Puts Wieden in a Supporting Role

NEW YORK—Wieden + Kennedy has won the review to become Pizza Hut’s secondary agency, sources said. The Portland, Ore., shop bested Cliff Freeman and Partners, Ogilvy & Mather and Saatchi & Saatchi, all New York. The shop won the account based on a brief for the Dallas-based client’s Insider pizza. Wieden will create ads for Pizza Hut’s “limited-time offers,” sources said. Previously, this work has included menu items, all handled by BBDO in New York, which holds the main account. Media spending on the assignment was undisclosed. Pizza Hut spent $140 million on advertising in 2001, per CMR.

Mullen Wins Clothing Unit of Eddie Bauer

SAN FRANCISCO—Eddie Bauer has chosen Mullen to handle ad efforts for its apparel unit, the client confirmed. Black Rocket Euro RSCG here and Omnicom’s Focus, a Seattle shop that uses the services of DDB Seattle, both pitched the business. Billings are estimated at $8-10 million. Mullen is based in Wenham, Mass.

HBO said last week that it has decided not to pursue a relationship with Berlin Cameron/Red Cell. Furthermore, the assignment at issue was worth “five figures,” not the $7-10 million previously reported [Adweek, March 11], according to a client representative.
