Opel Gets New European Image

DETROIT—McCann-Erickson, Frankfurt, Germany, has created a new European image campaign for General Motors’ Opel unit. TV spots launch in February and feature the Opel Astra Cabrio and Opel Zafira. The new tagline is: “Opel. Fresh thinking for better cars.” Print ads will be more product-oriented. The work will include a restyled corporate design with a new Opel emblem and yellow as the brand color. In March, the campaign will feature the all-new Opel Vectra.

GdB Hooks Zebco Account

CHICAGO—Fishing products marketer Zebco named Gabriel deGrood Bendt its lead advertising agency after a three-month review. The Minneapolis shop bested Borders Perrin & Norrander in Portland, Ore., Sawyer Riley Compton in Atlanta and Periscope in Minneapolis for the account. GdB will be responsible for print and television advertising for Zebco’s three brands: Rhino, Quantum and Zebco. Billings were not disclosed, but Zebco spent $1 million on advertising in 2000, according to CMR. Core in St. Louis was the Tulsa, Okla., company’s last known agency.

Carmichael Parts With Volvo Trucks

CHICAGO—Carmichael Lynch has parted with heavy-truck manufacturer Volvo Trucks North America, sources said. The Greensboro, N.C., company had been on the agency’s roster since June 1997, and the Minneapolis shop had produced two Super Bowl spots for the client in 1998 and 1999. Since then, the agency had been reduced to project work on the account. Staff changes at the client prompted the split, sources said. Volvo Trucks spent less than $1 million on advertising last year, according to CMR. The company spent $2 million in 1999.

U.S. Army to Play With Arena Football

CHICAGO—The U.S. Army has signed on as the Arena Football League’s official military service partner. As part of the deal, the Army will be allowed to set up recruiting stations at every AFL venue and provide color guard presentations at selected AFL games. The deal was brokered by Relay Sports and Event Marketing, a division of Starcom MediaVest Group.

Fruechte Named Partner at Kerker

CHICAGO—Kerker named director of account management Christine Fruechte executive vice president and partner of the agency. Fruechte joins president Chuck Kelly, media director Laurin Leih, creative director Chris Preston and CFO Philip Wendorf as partners of the Minneapolis shop.

AMD Cuts to 3

LOS ANGELES—Advanced Micro Devices has named three finalists in the review for its $25-30 million consolidated global account, according to Select Resources International, which is managing the review. They are: San Francisco agencies McCann-Erickson and Young & Rubicam, as well as LB Works in Chicago. Shops not advancing include D’Arcy Masius Benton & Bowles in Los Angeles, DDB in San Francisco and Lowe in New York. A decision is expected in early March.
