Saatchi’s Bauer Heads to London to Steer Sony

NEW YORK—Julie Bauer, former president and CEO of Saatchi & Saatchi in San Francisco and a managing partner here, is heading to London to become global equity director on Sony, a pan-European account with billings of $80-100 million. She succeeds William Leach, who is leaving. “I have always had a passion for the consumer electronics business and Sony in particular,” said Bauer, 43, in an e-mail to colleagues. Bauer, who managed the Hewlett-Packard business out of San Francisco, starts her new job Aug. 1. Her previous duties will be absorbed by other managing partners, said managing partner Tim Love.

IPG, TN Deal Closes at $1.6 Bil.

CHICAGO—The Interpublic Group of Cos. completed its acquisition of True North Communications last week following approval from TN shareholders, which backed the deal overwhelmingly, and the European Union. The deal, calculated as exchange of stock at 1.14 shares of IPG for all outstanding shares of TN, had a value of $1.6 billion at Friday’s closing IPG price. TN’s stock listing has been terminated with the Securities and Exchange Commission.

Media Shop Catalyst Seeks Buyer

LOS ANGELES—Media specialist Catalyst is talking to prospective buyers, said Frank Muratore, CEO of the New York-based agency. Catalyst, which recently changed its name from TBS Media Management, is one of the oldest media agencies in the U.S. It also has offices in Los Angeles and San Diego and claims billings of more than $200 million from clients such as

Rutman Named President of Carat USA

LOS ANGELES—Charlie Rutman, evp/managing director of Carat in New York, was named president of Carat USA, a new post. The veteran media executive said his advancement comes as Carat, under CEO David Verklin, adds responsibilities in North American markets, including Latin America, and the launch of new units such as Carat Direct. Carat is also staffing up and restructuring to absorb the more than $600 million in U.S. billings won this year from clients such as Pfizer and Philips Electronics.

$150 Mil. Motorola Media Review Drags On

CHICAGO—Contenders in Motorola’s $150 million media review aren’t sure what’s going on seven months after the Schaumburg, Ill.-based company sent out RFPs. The contenders are incumbent Universal McCann, MindShare and Initiative Media, all in New York. In July, when the client placed its creative account with Ogilvy & Mather, the decision was made to review Motorola’s media buying and planning. Sources said the review may have been put on hold until upfronts in New York are complete.

Calwell Jumps to Domino’s

NEW YORK—Domino’s Pizza tapped Ken Calwell as its new evp, Build the Brand. He joins in mid-July from Wendy’s, where he was vp, new product marketing, research and testing. Calwell replaces evp of International J. Patrick Doyle, who was interim evp, Build the Brand since December 2000, when Cheryl Bachelder left for KFC. Calwell reports to CEO David Brandon. Deutsch in New York handles the $100 million account.
