AT&T Wireless Expects to Make Cut This Week

NEW YORK—AT&T Wireless is expected to make a cut this week to three agency finalists in its $400 million review, sources said. Representatives from six shops attended credentials meetings last week at AT&T’s Basking Ridge, N.J., headquarters. Vying for the account are Fallon Minneapolis, Leo Burnett in Chicago, Ogilvy & Mather, FCB and Saatchi & Saatchi, all New York, and TBWA\Chiat\Day in Playa del Rey, Calif. The client is said to be looking for a shop that can handle “heavy retail,” a source said.

GM Vet Tapped to Run Ford for JWT

DETROIT—Longtime General Motors executive Michael O’Malley has joined J. Walter Thompson as executive vice president and global business director for Ford Motor Co. O’Malley takes over as the agency’s head executive on Ford from Peter Schweitzer, who was promoted to chief executive officer of JWT in January. For the past year, O’Malley has been general manager of GM’s Cadillac division.

‘Consortium’ Seeks Agency Through RFP

New YORK—Proposal requests for a $50 million account from an unidentified “consortium” went out last week from Select Resources International. Speculation was the RFP, which went to shops over $250 million in billings, involved category-specific advertising, possibly in the food and beverage category. Los Angeles-based SRI asked for credentials, case studies and reels. The RFPs ask whether agencies have “turnaround expertise.” SRI officials declined comment.

Tribal DDB Gets McDonald’s Interative Work

CHICAGO—Tribal DDB has been named lead interactive agency for McDonald’s, further cementing the fast food chain’s relationship with DDB. Tribal DDB will handle digital consulting, technology, marketing and e-commerce initiatives for the Oak Brook, Ill.-based chain. McDonald’s splits its lead advertising between DDB and Leo Burnett, both Chicago.

Layoffs Strike CM, Y&R

CHICAGO—Layoffs continued last week. Campbell Mithun in Minneapolis eliminated 21 jobs, about 3 percent of the staff of 600. Management cited “the harsh reality of the current economic climate and the larger industry downturn.” Young & Rubicam laid off five employees in Chicago last week as part of a “restructuring” at the shop, an agency representative said. The layoffs were mostly the result of the agency merging its production studios, the representative said. In February the agency laid of nine of its then 160 employees.

Minneapolis Shop Among Coffee Contenders

NEW ORLEANS—Community Coffee here has narrowed its agency review to a short list of three shops, all outside Louisiana. Sources said two of the unnamed finalists are located in Dallas; one is in Minneapolis. A decision is expected by May 14 for the creative account, estimated at $4 million. Incumbent The Richards Group of Dallas, which handled the brand account for 13 years, did not participate.
