Ryan Named Top McDonald’s Marketer

CHICAGO—McDonald’s USA promoted Tom Ryan, senior vice president of menu management and new concepts, to senior vice president of marketing, replacing Larry Zwain. Ryan, who joined McDonald’s in 1997, will also retain his menu management duties. Zwain was named senior vice president/relationship partner for McDonald’s within the Asia/Pacific/Middle East/Africa Group of the Oak Brook, Ill.-based restaurant chain. Under Zwain, McDonald’s launched its “We love to see you smile” campaign from DDB Chicago, which shares ad agency duties for McDonald’s with Leo Burnett.

Ex-Chrysler Exec May Go to JWT

DETROIT—Arthur “Bud” Liebler, who is leaving his position as senior vice president of Chrysler group marketing, is a top candidate to head the Ford account at J. Walter Thompson, sources said. Peter Schweitzer, who headed the Ford business as president of JWT Worldwide and chairman of JWT North America, last month was named CEO of JWT. Schweitzer remains in Detroit and involved with the Ford business, but the shop has been looking for a senior executive to oversee Ford, the agency’s largest client. A JWT spokesman said no decision has been made as to who will fill Schweitzer’s role with Ford.

Doner Breaks First Work for Petsmart

DETROIT—Doner breaks its first TV work for Phoenix-based Petsmart this week with a campaign that includes a new tagline: “Petsmart: All you need for the life of your pet,” which replaces “Where pets are family,” sources said. Doner executives declined comment. The Southfield, Mich., agency won the $25 million account in December, unseating the longtime incumbent Publicis, Seattle.

Ford Execs Move to DaimlerChrysler

DETROIT-—Two Ford marketing executives are joining DaimlerChrysler. Jim Schroer, formerly Ford’s vice president of global marketing, joins the Chrysler Group as executive vice president of global sales and marketing. George Murphy, formerly Ford Division general marketing manager, comes on as senior vice president, global brand marketing. At Ford, no replacements for Schroer or Murphy have been named, according to a spokesman. One candidate for Murphy’s position, sources said, is Jan Klug, marketing communications manager for Ford Division.

ConAgra Shops Meat Account

DALLAS—ConAgra is contacting agencies to handle an undisclosed assignment valued at $20 million, sources said. Contacts are being made before proposal requests are sent out. Non-roster shops are being included in the search process, which is being handled out of the company’s Irvine, Calif. marketing office.

Playtex Hears From 4 Shops

CHICAGO—Playtex Apparel heard presentations last week from four shops competing for its $12 million account, a company representative said. The Westport, Conn.-unit of Sara Lee split with DDB Chicago in January. The representative declined to identify the shops, which are in New York and Chicago. A decision is expected in mid-March.
