Avis to Start Review After 14 Years at Bates
NEW YORK – Avis Rent A Car System has hired consultant Pile & Co. to conduct a review of its ad account, which has been at Bates USA since 1985, sources said. Bates resigned the business Friday over “creative and strategic differences,” an agency representative said. Garden City, N.Y.-based Avis, which spent nearly $30 million on ads last year, is expected to nearly double that budget, sources said. Bates’ most recent work is tagged, “We try harder. For you.” A decline in market share prompted the review. Avis ranked fifth in sales behind market leader Enterprise last year. Consultant Skip Pile in Boston, who could not be reached, is expected to start contacting agencies this week.
Wieden Takes on Just For Feet Project
LOS ANGELES – Wieden & Kennedy’s Portland office is working on a project for shoe retailer Just For Feet, an agency representative confirmed. The client parted with Saatchi & Saatchi Roland, Rochester, N.Y., after it created a controversial TV spot that ran on this year’s Super Bowl. The spot showed a black runner drugged by white men, who then put sneakers on his feet. Many deemed it racist. Just For Feet and Saatchi are suing each other.
Doner Secures $30 Mil. ADT Account
DETROIT – Doner has been awarded the $30 million ADT security firm account. The account was previously handled by Rapp Collins Worldwide, New York, which did not defend, sources said. Doner in Southfield, Mich., bested at least two other shops, including Bozell Kamstra, Peabody, Mass., formerly McDougall Associates, which handles advertising for ADT parent Tyco International. AAR/Bob Wolf Partners handled the review.
TBWA/C/D Nabs Grand; DDB Leads Effie Winners
NEW YORK – TBWA/Chiat/Day last week won the Grand Effie for effective advertising for its “chihuahua” campaign for Taco Bell. DDB landed the most Effies, a total of 12, including four golds. The New York American Marketing Marketing Association also awarded Young & Rubicam and BBDO seven Effies each; Fallon McElligott won six.

Remaining contenders for the $65 million account are: Bates Worldwide, DDB, Weiss Stagliano Partners and Young & Rubicam, all New York, which presented Friday. Partners & Shevack/Wolf is presenting today … Wrangler is expecting some 35 shops to return questionnaires this week for the creative portion of its $30 million account. The Martin Agency in Richmond, Va., is the incumbent … Messner Vetere Berger McNamee Schmetterer/Euro RSCG, New York, has withdrawn from the estimated $35 million Applebee’s International review … A decision in the International Olympic Committee’s $150 million review is expected by month’s end.
