Hughes Leaves Cole Henderson Drake ATLANTA--Less than two months after Cole Henderson Drake acquired her agency, Hughes Advertising, Dorothy Hughes has resigned as CHD president. The two Atlanta shops came together with much fanfare [Adweek, July 12], but "we needed Dorothy to hit the ground working, and she wasn't able to do that," said CHD chairman John Drake. "She was spending all her time dealing with Hughes Advertising-related issues, and we felt it made more sense for us to distance ourselves and allow her to deal with that." One contribution Hughes made before leaving was to appoint Chris Jacobs creative director. Jacobs, 31, was a copywriter at The Martin Agency in Richmond, Va., and worked on the Alltel, Pagenet and Marriott accounts, among others. Hughes was not available for comment at press time. TVA Narrows Its Advertising Choices ATLANTA--The Tennessee Valley Authority has made a cut in the mandatory review of its $1.4 million advertising account, according to sources. Incumbent Fitzgerald & Company and J. Walter Thompson, both of Atlanta, are said to be joined by The Buntin Group in Nashville, Tenn., and the St. Louis office of D'Arcy Masius Benton & Bowles in pursuit of the Knoxville, Tenn., energy wholesaler's account. A final decision is expected this month. Martin Moves to Abramson as Associate CD ATLANTA--David H. Martin, son of Martin Agency founder David N. Martin, has joined Abramson Labus Van De Velde as associate creative director. Martin, who had been creative director at Kershner & Co. in Alexandria, Va., said he took the lesser position "to work under [executive creative director] Terry Coveny as my mentor." Last week [Adweek, Aug. 30], the Washington, D.C., agency announced the return of Coveny, who was at the shop from 1982 to 1989. Singer Sewing Selects Image III ATLANTA--Image III has been named agency of record for the consumer products division of Singer Sewing Company. The Nashville, Tenn., agency won the $1 million Mulfreesboro, Tenn., advertising account over in-state finalists The Maryland Group in Brentwood and The Buntin Group and Gish, Sherwood & Friends, both in Nashville. Webb-Patterson Wins Better Sex Series ATLANTA--The Sinclair Intimacy Institute has named Webb-Patterson Communications winner of the minority agency search to promote its new "Better Sex Video Series for Black Couples." The Durham, N.C., shop "created print concepts good enough to be produced in the next month . . . and radio advertising that will break in mid-September," said the Chapel Hill, N.C., client's managing director, Alan Hecht. He said the launch budget was "roughly $250,000" but could expand into the millions.
