Oldsmobile Sponsoring X-Files Events
CHICAGO–General Motors’ Oldsmobile division’s Intrigue model will be the sole sponsor of The X-Files Expo, a 10-city road show beginning March 6 in San Francisco. Frankel & Co., Chicago, Olds’ promotions agency, engineered the tie-in with Twentieth Century Fox Licensing and Merchandising, Pasadena, Calif. The shop will conduct dealer promotions in each participating city. The expo includes exclusive merchandise and appearances by creative personnel from The X-Files TV show.
DMB&B Promotes TWA’s Expanded First Class
CHICAGO–Trans World Airlines today breaks a 30-second TV spot promoting 60 percent more first-class seating. Airline workers appear in the spot, from D’Arcy Masius Benton & Bowles, St. Louis, which promotes the “Trans World First” program. Computer graphics demonstrate how the redesigned TWA fleet accommodates a roomier front section. A voiceover asks, “Ever wished there was just one more seat in first class?” That line is also used in accompanying print ads. “We want to be your airline” continues as TWA’s tagline.
Hormel to Launch El Torito Foods Line
CHICAGO–Hormel Foods will market a line of retail food products under the name of the Irvine, Calif.-based El Torito Restaurants chain. The El Torito line will include salsas, sauces, salad dressings and taco kits, to be sold primarily in the Western U.S. Advertising is likely to be placed with BBDO Minneapolis, which handles Austin, Minn.-based Hormel’s Chi-Chi’s brand of Mexican foods, according to company sources.
Moore Joins APL in Chicago
CHICAGO–Jon Moore, a senior vice president and executive creative director at Leo Burnett here, was named co-creative director for Ammirati Puris Lintas’ new Chicago office, teaming with Tim Kane, formerly of J. Walter Thompson in New York. The office’s general manager position has yet to be filled. APL Chicago was formed to handle creative duties on the $100 million Ameritech account and will seek additional business.
Quaker Oats Unveils New ‘Mikey’
CHICAGO–Quaker Oats on Jan. 19 breaks a 30-second TV spot introducing Marli Brianna Hughes, winner of its “Be the next Mikey” photo contest. The original “Mikey” commercial ran from 1974-86. The 4-year-old Hughes now appears on Life boxes. Foote, Cone & Belding, Chicago, is the agency.
Doner’s Blett Heads Auto Unit
DETROIT–W.B. Doner & Co., Southfield, Mich., named Tim Blett president of Doner Automotive, a new post, overseeing the $240 million Mazda North America account the agency won in November. Blett was previously executive vice president and director of Doner’s automotive division, overseeing the regional Ford dealers business, which Doner resigned after the Mazda win.
