DSI Toys Shifts to Active International
DALLAS–Houston-based DSI Toys last week awarded its estimated $10 million advertising account to Active International, Pearl River, N.Y., ending a five-month review. The company had declined to comment throughout the selection process. Among the shops that surfaced as contenders during the review were: W.B. Doner & Co., Cleveland; Bozell and D’Arcy Masius Benton & Bowles, both New York; and McCann-Erickson, Houston. Sive/Young & Rubicam, Cincinnati, was the incumbent.
Morales Halts ‘Misleading Infomercials’
DALLAS–Texas Attorney General Dan Morales, along with Attorneys General of eight other states, obtained a court order last week that required Talk America Inc. and Natures Pure Body Institute, Portland, Maine, to stop airing a healthcare products informercial that promotes Purifast 30, Daily Harvest and Natural Hairs. The products claim to provide various health benefits but are not FDA approved. In a statement, Morales said the company agreed to “significantly change the way it promotes its products” but did not admit to any wrong-doing. The company agreed to pay participating states $150,000 for investigative costs and attorneys fees.
Lin Productions Gains Rangers’ TV Work
DALLAS–The Texas Rangers Baseball Club, Arlington, Texas, shifted television advertising duties to Lin Productions, Arlington, from The Richards Group, Dallas. Lin also serves as production company for the Rangers’ telecasts. Lin Productions is a subsidiary of Lin Television Corp., which also does production work for the Dallas Mavericks and Dallas Stars.
Lamar Purchases 5 Outdoor Specialists
DALLAS–Lamar Advertising Co., an outdoor firm in Baton Rouge, La., has completed or agreed to purchase five outdoor advertising companies serving markets in the Southwest and Midwest for approximately $50 million. Lamar closed on a deal for Ragan Outdoor, which operates 1,492 displays in Rockford, Ill., and Cedar Rapids and Davenport, Iowa, for $25 million. In addition, Lamar agreed to acquire Derby Outdoor’s 455 displays in Rapid City, S.D., for $6 million. The company also signed a purchase agreement for outdoor companies Pioneer, Overland and Superior, all in Springfield, Mo., for $19.2 million.
M/A/R/C Unit to Acquire British Marketer
DALLAS–Targetbase Marketing International, a subsidiary of the Targetbase Marketing division of The M/A/R/C Group, Irving, Texas, is exercising its option to acquire the remaining 75 percent of Intelligent Database Marketing, a British database marketing firm, effective Jan. 31. As part of the original agreement, announced Nov. 4, 1997, TMI obtained the option to acquire the remaining percentage of IDM over a two-year period. The acquisition is scheduled to close by early April.
