Lonestar Restarts Review
CHICAGO–Lonestar Steakhouse & Saloon will hear pitches from additional agencies this week for its $8-10 million account. Sources said the Wichita, Kan.-based restaurant chain was not satisfied with presentations from finalists J. Walter Thompson, Chicago, Earle Palmer Brown, New York, and McCann-Erickson, Seattle. McCann has abandoned the pitch; the status of the other agencies could not be determined. Lonestar and agency officials declined comment.
O’Donnell, Marshall Police Kmart
CHICAGO–Talk-show host Rosie O’Donnell and director Penny Marshall appear as “price police” in a new TV ad for Troy, Mich.-based Kmart Corp.’s Big Kmart stores. The spot, which breaks this week in 18 markets including Chicago, New York and Los Angeles, was produced by Campbell Mithun Esty, Minneapolis.
Meldrum & Fewsmith Beefs Up
CHICAGO–Meldrum & Fewsmith, Cleveland, has won a review for the Certified Angus Beef Program. The other contenders were Hazelow & Associates in Mayfield Heights, Ohio, and Atlanta shops Triangle Group and Turner & Turner. Billings were estimated at $6-8 million. Meldrum will develop the program’s first large-scale advertising campaign.
Claffey Takes Over Burnett Unit
CHICAGO–Leo Burnett USA, Chicago, has hired Tim Claffey to head up its direct and promotions unit. Claffey, 45, was most recently general manager and executive creative director of the Chicago office of OgilvyOne, Ogilvy & Mather’s direct marketing unit.
Simpson Leaves Periscope
CHICAGO–Jim Simpson, president of integrated marketing at Periscope Marketing Communications, Minneapolis, has left the agency to pursue other interests, the shop announced last week. His duties will be absorbed by the agency’s remaining management team, which includes chairman and chief executive officer Bill Simpson, advertising president Jeff Wright and executive creative director Mark Haumersen.
Scudder Taps Gotham
BOSTON–Scudder Kemper Investments in Boston last week awarded Gotham, New York, its $15-20 million account. The other finalists were Grey Advertising in New York, Impact Communications/FCB in Chicago, and Saatchi & Saatchi in Toronto.
KSL Media Keeps Victoria’s Secret
BOSTON–KSL Media, New York, has retained media buying duties for the estimated $50 million account of Victoria’s Secret. Edward Razek of Limited Brand and Creative Services, the New York-based division of The Limited in Columbus, Ohio, which owns Victoria’s Secret, confirmed the assignment.
