– Martin Agency Wins Best of Show at Obies
ATLANTA–The Martin Agency won best of show at the Outdoor Advertising Association of America’s 58th annual Obie Awards. The Richmond, Va., agency’s work for, featuring a fully wrapped bus covered with copy, won the $50,000 grand prize. Other winners included last year’s best of show winner, Arnold Communications, Boston, for its ongoing Volkswagen work; a campaign from Colby Effler & Partners, Santa Monica, Calif., for Oolong Tea; Peterson Milla Hooks, Minneapolis, for Target; Borders, Perrin & Norrander, Portland, Ore., for Garden Grow; and New York’s CMG Communications for the New York City Fire Museum.
– BaylessCronin Slam-Dunks Atlanta Hawks
ATLANTA–BaylessCronin has won the creative portion of the Atlanta Hawks ad account, according to Ken Bowes, president of Wanamaker, the consultancy conducting the review. BaylessCronin, a division of Omnicom-owned Merkley Newman Harty, topped two other Atlanta agencies, Ames Scullin O’Haire and Sawyer Riley Compton, for the NBA team’s $2 million account. The business had previously been handled by an in-house department, which will retain the media portion.
– Shapes Total Fitness Switches to Devine
ATLANTA–Devine Communications has been named agency of record for women’s workout center Shapes Total Fitness and its co-ed subsidiary, Southside Fitness. The agency topped another Tampa, Fla., shop, incumbent Elizabeth Lawrence Communications, for the estimated $750,000 hometown account. There are currently 10 Shapes and two Southside locations. The company has plans for future expansion.
– Leslie Launches Diversity Marketing Unit
ATLANTA–The Leslie Agency has created a diversity marketing division to assist clients in reaching ethnic consumers. Leslie Diversity Marketing, located with its parent in Greenville, S.C., will be headed by Anastasia Howard, who has more than 20 years of communications experience. She most recently operated her own company, 95th Street Communications. Immediate clients are Sprint PCS, Mayfield Dairy Farms and South Carolina Parks, Recreation and Tourism.
– Texas Evaluates 6 for Anti-Smoking Account
DALLAS–The Texas Department of Health is reviewing six in-state agencies for its $4-5 million anti-smoking ad campaign, part of the $17 billion won by the state in a lawsuit against Big Tobacco. The contenders are Tuerff-Davis EnviroMedia, Sherry Matthews Advertising and r.j. kolar, all in Austin, Inventiva of San Antonio, AB Graphics in Athens and Artworks Advertising of Killeen. The state agency expects to make a decision in mid-July.
– Minor Layoffs at Temerlin After Penney Loss
DALLAS–Temerlin McClain has laid off nine employees, less than 2 percent of its workforce, following the loss of the $200 million J. C Penney business earlier this year. David Lyon, president of the Irving, Texas, agency, said most employees on the Penney account were reassigned due to growth from other clients.
