Canadian Club Review Narrowed to 4
CHICAGO–Four finalists will make presentations later this month in the review for creative duties on Allied Domecq’s $5-10 million Canadian Club account, according to sources. The agencies are: The Richards Group, Dallas; BBDO, Chicago; Cliff Freeman and Partners, New York; and Foote, Cone Belding, San Francisco. Representatives of the agencies and the client either declined comment or could not be reached. Incumbent DDB Needham, New York, declined to participate. Media buying responsibilities for the blended whisky brand are expected to remain with Hudson Media Group, New York.

C-E Communications Adds R.R. Donnelley
DETROIT–C-E Communications in Warren, Mich., was named agency of record for R.R. Donnelley & Sons’ merchandise media group, its largest business unit, after a review that included several undisclosed Midwest agencies. Chicago-based R.R. Donnelley is a $5 billion company that prints and distributes catalogs, books, magazines and directories.

Kmart Twins Shania Twain, Gitano Jeans
CHICAGO–Kmart on Aug. 2 broke a TV spot featuring country singer Shania Twain and a special offer for Gitano missy jeans, which the Troy, Mich.-based retailer markets exclusively. The 30-second spot was created by Kmart agency Campbell Mithun Esty in Minneapolis.

GSD&M, Deutsch Drop Out of Promus Review
DALLAS–GSD&M, Austin, Texas, and Deutsch, New York, withdrew from Promus Hotel Corp.’s agency review, leaving five shops in contention for the $40 million account. GSD&M was the incumbent on Promus’ $16 million Doubletree business. The remaining contenders are DDB Needham Dallas; Hill, Holliday, Connors, Cosmopulos and Arnold Communications, both Boston; TBWA Chiat/Day, New York; and Foote, Cone & Belding, Chicago. DDB Needham is the incumbent for Promus’ Hampton, Embassy Suites and Homewood Suites chains. Presentations are expected to conclude this week.

Draft In Talks for Compaq’s Direct Account
DALLAS–Compaq Computer Corp. is negotiating with DraftWorldwide in Chicago about assuming direct marketing chores for the Houston-based company, sources said. That work currently is at Ammirati Puris Lintas, New York, which lost the brand advertising portion of the account to DDB Needham, New York, in June. Both DraftWorldwide and APL are units of Interpublic Group of Cos. Representatives of Compaq, DraftWorldwide and APL declined to comment.
