– J.C. Penney Has a Short List of Contenders
DALLAS–Department store chain J.C. Penney has contacted five agencies to participate in a review for its $100 million advertising account following its recent split with Temerlin McClain. Invited to the competition are BBDO Worldwide, DDB Worldwide, McCann-Erickson Worldwide and Saatchi & Saatchi, all New York, plus an undetermined agency to represent True North Communications of Chicago. “We’re going to let them come back to us and tell us who they think would be best,” said spokesperson Stephanie Brown of True North, the parent company of Temerlin, Irving, Texas. A decision is expected in March.

– Banco Popular Chooses The Bravo Group
DALLAS–Banco Popular has awarded its $10 million advertising account to The Bravo Group in New York following a review in which Dieste & Partners of Dallas also participated. The Chicago-based client is the main subsidiary of Popular Inc., a bank holding company headquartered in Puerto Rico with $23.7 billion in assets. Banco Popular is currently the largest Hispanic banking franchise in the U.S.

– Pennzoil-Quaker Signs Hispanic Agency
DALLAS–Pennzoil-Quaker State Company has hired cruz/kravetz: Ideas to handle Hispanic creative work for its best-selling Pennzoil motor oil brand. The Los Angeles agency will operate under the direction of the Houston client’s agency of record, GSD&M of Austin, Texas. Hispanic market media buying will continue to be handled by Austin-based Amistad Media Group.

– United Way Campaign Selects NourzAds
DALLAS–NourzAds has been selected by United Way/Capital Area to provide advertising and creative strategy for the organization’s 2000 fundraising campaign.The Austin-based agency will design print materials, promotional giveaways, television and radio public service announcements, and Web-related products. A large portion of the agency’s services will be donated. “Although we enjoy hawking soap suds, it’s nice to do work for . . . a group that benefits so many in need in Austin,” said agency president M.P. Nourzad.

– Tocquigny Acquires Pair of New Accounts
DALLAS–Tocquigny Advertising & Design has acquired GiftGoodies.com, a virtual gift basket company, and Tejas Securities Group, an investment banking firm, as clients. Tocquigny will develop a corporate identity and traffic-driving strategy for GiftGoodies, whose sites include Xmasgoodies.com, Homegoodies.com and Birthday-
goodies.com. The shop has an initial corporate identity development and Web site redesign project from Tejas. Both clients and agency are based in Austin, Texas.

– BBDO South Bows First Bayer Pursell TV
ATLANTA–BBDO South breaks a national television campaign for Bayer Pursell’s new garden products on the West Coast this week. The four ads from the Atlanta agency for the Birmingham, Ala., client give personalities to subjects like a rose or beetle, then listen to them thinking aloud about Bayer Pursell’s products.
