BK Tests Ideas From Contending Shops

NEW YORK—Burger King has started to test campaigns created by contenders in the review for creative duties on its $400 million account. Competing for the business are Grey Worldwide and McCann-Erickson in New York and Campbell Mithun, Minneapolis. Each finalist has produced at least one campaign featuring the Whopper that will undergo several tests, sources said. The spots will be incorporated into a reel showcasing different brands to see if the Burger King work stands out among the “clutter,” sources said. Focus groups and copy testing also will be employed. A winner, based in large part on test results, is expected next month.

Sub-Zero Narrows Search

CHICAGO—Sub-Zero Refrigerator Corp. has narrowed the review for its $8-10 million account to two agencies, Martin/Williams in Minneapolis and The Richards Group in Irving, Texas, according to Steve Raye, the consultant handling the search. Out are incumbent Kerker in Minneapolis and The Martin Agency in Richmond, Va. Carmichael Lynch in Minneapolis withdrew citing a conflict. The two finalists made presentations to executives from the Madison, Wis., company last week and a decision is expected later this week, Raye said.

AB Uncaps Tequiza Review

CHICAGO—Anheuser-Busch is considering several shops to handle a spring campaign for Tequiza, the St. Louis brewery said. Waylon Ad, which has handled the brand launch and ads in the past two years, is among the contenders, the brewery said. Spending has been $1 million, according to Competitive Media Reporting.

Empower Gets Media for Oxydol Relaunch

CHICAGO—Redox Brands assigned consumer media planning and buying duties for the relaunch of its Oxydol laundry detergent to Empower MediaMarketing, Cincinnati. The West Chester, Ohio-based private company was formed earlier this year with a goal to acquire and develop name-brand consumer cleaning products. Redox bought the 86-year-old Oxydol brand from Procter & Gamble in Cincinnati earlier this year. Billings for the relaunch were not disclosed.

VML Wins Work

CHICAGO—Payless ShoeSource tapped VML in Kansas City, Mo., to handle online advertising and in-store promotions for its Web site. The Topeka, Kan., company’s $80 million traditional advertising account is handled by Barkley Evergreen & Partners in Kansas City. Billings for the account were not disclosed.

GM Tests Ideas for Oldsmobile

DETROIT—General Motors Oldsmobile officials had a final round of meetings last week with the three agencies competing for an upcoming brand campaign, sources said. The creative is currently being tested by Diagnostic Research International, Los Angeles. Olds is considering campaign suggestions from lead agency Leo Burnett, Chicago, McCann-Erickson Worldwide, Troy, Mich., and New York, and E. Morris Communications, Chicago.
