LOS ANGELES-TBWA/Chiat/Day rolled out the first TV spot last week in an estimated $40 million campaign to support Tricon’s promotional tie-in with the new Star Wars film The Phantom Menace. The spot marked the first time Tricon’s three fast-food brands-Taco Bell, Pizza Hut and KFC-are being featured in the same ad. TBWA/C/D’s Playa del Rey, Calif., office won an internal pitch among Tricon shops several months ago for the assignment.

LOS ANGELES-Outdoorwear fabric company Outlast Technologies selected Cole & Weber to create a new brand advertising campaign, following a review of several shops. The Seattle agency prevailed over The Richards Group, Dallas, The Integer Group, Denver, and a few undisclosed agencies to win the estimated $6-10 million account. Incumbent MPH Strategic Brand Communications, Boulder, Colo., declined to participate in the pitch. C&W will incorporate its “360-degree” brand strategy to develop a comprehensive sales and marketing effort, ranging from point-of-sale through advertising, sales collateral and interactive Web site development. The Boulder-based company cited C&W’s experience in the category and global capabilities through parent Ogilvy & Mather as important factors as the company looks to grow its business internationally.

Acknowledging last week that they have enlisted Los Angeles consultancy Select Resources International to contact agencies about their estimated $50 million account, executives of WebTV, Palo Alto, Calif., said incumbent Rubin Postaer and Associates, Santa Monica, Calif., has been invited to defend the business. “Rubin Postaer has performed well, and we’re happy with them,” said WebTV representative David Patchen. “They’ve helped us achieve our sales objectives, and they’re still our agency of record. We expect to continue our relationship with them for a long time.” … Wieden & Kennedy, Portland, Ore., has dropped out of the review for Starwood Hotels and Resorts Worldwide, White Plains, N.Y. The remaining contenders for the estimated $65 million account are Bates Worldwide, DDB, Partners & Shevak/Wolf, Weiss Stagliano Partners and Young & Rubicam, all in New York.

Ground Zero, Marina del Rey, Calif., has picked up ad duties for Sun International’s Resorts Hotel & Casino, Atlantic City, N.J. The agency also handles Sun’s Atlantis Paradise Islands resort, which opened in December. Billings were not disclosed. … Culver Amherst, a New York advertising and outdoor media company, which recently won a contract from the city of Huntington Beach, Calif., to install bus shelters and benches, plans to open an office in that city to service the account and will hire a staff of 15.
