McCann in Talks With Hollywood PR Firm
NEW YORK–McCann-Erickson WorldGroup is in discussions with PMK about acquiring the Hollywood, Calif.-based public relations firm, a McCann representative confirmed. If the deal goes through, sources speculate PMK could be folded into one of the marketing services “corridors” in McCann’s WorldGroup umbrella. It would also add to the Interpublic Group of Cos.’ holdings in Hollywood. IPG already owns talent agency Industry Entertainment.
Butterfinger Slips Away From JWT West
SAN FRANCISCO–JWT West’s estimated $10-15 million Nestle Buttefinger candy bar business is being transitioned to the agency’s Chicago office, sources said. Executives with J. Walter Thompson USA, New York, are concerned that Nestle “isn’t being serviced well enough,” sources said. JWT West chief executive officer and worldwide creative director Larry Tolpin said, “The Chicago office has been working with us on confectionary projects since [Jan. 1].” Sources said the JWT Chicago is taking the lead on a new round of ads for Butterfinger.
WongDoody Hits Up Buyers at Super Bowl
ATLANTA–Ahead of this weekend’s Super Bowl in Miami, Seattle-based WongDoody’s Santa Monica, Calif., office, has plastered the Florida city with images of Fox’s NFL pregame anchors. The ads, on transit shelters, bus wraps, outdoor boards and elsewhere, show the faces of Terry Bradshaw, James Brown, Chris Collingworth and Howie Long pasted onto 1930s-era images of football players. The effort is aimed at the throngs of media buyers in town for the big game.

Goodby, Silverstein & Partners, San Francisco, is no longer pursuing an estimated $15-20 million project for Golden Grain, Pleasanton, Calif., a division of Quaker Oats, Chicago, for an undisclosed new product launch. Sources said Goodby wants to devote its resources to “other new business opportunities.” The remaining finalists are Gardner, Geary, Coll & Young, San Francisco, and Suissa Miller, Los Angeles. … Bugle Boy Industries, Simi Valley, Calif., has begun a search for a shop to handle its estimated $5 million account. Incumbent DDB Needham, Los Angeles, will not participate in the review. Consultancy Select Resources International in Los Angeles is handling the search.

The Andrew Jergens Co. in Cincinnati has moved the creative portion of its estimated $23 million Jergens skin care business to Bozell Worldwide, New York. Suissa Miller in Los Angeles previously handled the account. … Butler, Shine & Stern, Sausalito, Calif., has been awarded the estimated $15 million creative and media account of video game developer and publisher 989 Studios, Foster City, Calif., a division of Sony Computer Entertainment America.
