Horizon Media Tallies a Double

Horizon Media’s new-business fortunes were rosy on both coasts last week. The agency’s Los Angeles office won media duties for steakhouse chain Stuart Anderson’s Black Angus, while New York headquarters picked up weight-loss marketer Nutri-System.

Combined, the billings on the two accounts are an estimated $50 million. The assignments were given following separate media reviews.

Black Angus, which operates 103 restaurants in 13 Western and Midwestern states, considered several other undisclosed West Coast shops before handing Horizon its estimated $10 million account. Initiative Media North America here was the incumbent.

Horizon’s job includes broadcast and print media. Newspaper inserts will continue to be handled in-house. Zuckerman Fernandez & Partners in San Francisco is the creative agency for the Los Altos, Calif.-based advertiser.

“[Black Angus] is retail, it’s high-visibility and it’s also in a very competitive category that is extremely challenging and really allows us to show our competitive advantage,” said Bill Koenigsberg, Horizon president and CEO.

With the win, Horizon’s claimed billings here in the West top the $100 million watershed.

Nutri-System’s media planning and buying account, meanwhile, is worth an estimated $40 million-plus. The Philadelphia company suspended national advertising in 1998 when it shuttered its bricks-and-mortar centers and began recreating itself as an online marketer. It will return to the advertising scene in December with a budget of $20-30 million, comparable to what it was in 1998, said Joann Bradley, the company’s vice president of advertising.

Horizon’s task includes media duties for Sweet Success, the weight-loss drink Nutri-System recently acquired from Nestlé and will relaunch in January.

Spending levels for Sweet Success are not final, but Bradley said the brand will get at least $20 million in support.

Nutri-System’s last media shop was KSL Media, New York. That relationship ended in 1998 with the company’s move to cyberspace. In this review, Horizon competed against Tierney & Partners, Phila delphia, and E&M Advertising, New York. Creative remains in-house.

“Nutri-System is a well-known brand name repositioning itself,” said Koenigsberg. “The client needs immediate awareness and is very results-oriented.”
