With the U.S. in the midst of its longest stretch without job growth in 20 years, it’s no surprise that finding a job takes time. According to a recent New York Times Job Market survey of 200 job seekers, 60 percent spend an average of seven hours a week reading want ads and respond to about 69 job listings. Why only seven hours? “There are a finite number of listings to read,” says Job Market research director Jennifer Lacy. “This doesn’t include other time-consuming activities like writing letters, setting up appointments and interviewing.” But while seekers are equally divided on whether they spend more time searching online job boards or print ads, the 250 hiring managers polled say they still rely largely on newspapers to identify and hire the most qualified candidates. Time to pull the classifieds out of the recycling bin. —TH
