It’s common for singles to catch nerves before a first date, but trying to date during a pandemic presents a new level of stress.
Hinge is hoping to alleviate pre-date jitters and self-doubt with new audio meditations for members. The dating app has partnered with online meditation platform Headspace to launch two pre-date meditations timed to World Mental Health Day on Oct. 10. The meditations, titled Pre-Date Nerves and Your Inner Voice, are accessible on hinge.com/headspace.
“At Hinge, we know taking care of your mental health and well-being is crucial to creating a meaningful connection and over these past few months, singles have been feeling more anxious,” said Hinge founder and CEO Justin McLeod in a statement. “We want our users to be calm and relaxed when connecting with each other, so it was a no-brainer to partner with Headspace to develop the first-ever meditations for daters.”
Hinge landed on the meditation themes by analyzing data from its own research study, which found that 47% of Hinge users felt anxious or nervous before asking a match on an in-person or virtual date. The study also found one in three users have talked themselves out of having a date.
Headspace director of meditation Eve Lewis guides listeners in both meditations, which are approximately seven minutes long. Pre-Date Nerves is designed to help listeners feel grounded and relaxed before their date, while Your Inner Voice aims to quiet negative and self-critical thoughts one might experience before a date.
“World Mental Health Day is a great reminder to be kind to our minds,” Lewis said in a statement. “If this year has taught us anything, it’s that our mental health is as important as our physical health. We hope these pre-date meditations can help bring some calm, clarity and compassion during these stressful times.”
This has been a busy year for Hinge. After launching its first online shop in January, the brand joined other dating apps in launching in-app features for virtual dates and donating to antiracist organizations.
