Henke Joins Kolar Advertising as Executive CD

Kolar Advertising & Marketing has appointed David Henke to the new position of executive creative director following a six-month search.

Henke joins the Austin, Texas, shop from Ayer (formerly N.W. Ayer & Partners) in New York, where he was executive vice president and group creative director. Among the accounts he worked on: General Motors, Old El Paso and U.S. West.

He also has been executive creative director at Temerlin McClain in Irving, Texas, and group creative director at D’Arcy Masius Benton & Bowles in St. Louis.

Cindy Goldman has been overseeing Kolar’s creative department as creative director. The shop was looking to strengthen its advertising output by bringing in someone with big-agency experience who has worked on national accounts, said chief executive officer Rhonda Kolar.

“Clients were asking us to solve different issues and we felt like we needed to find someone who had broader experience,” Kolar said.

Henke said he was attracted to the agency’s “momentum,” which he quantified by noting he is the fifth senior-level hire in the last year.

He also liked the idea of working for an independent agency. Henke left Ayer soon after Bcom3 Group merged it into The Kaplan Thaler Group of New York last April.

“The heart and soul of [Kolar] is here,” Henke said. “It’s not invested in New York at a holding company and doesn’t exist in offices across the globe. As a person who’s lived through all these [consolidations], where [the work is] becoming more of a business and less about ideas, this is extremely attractive.”

Henke hopes to put the 40-person shop’s work on a national level. “You don’t run apologies on your ad because you’re local,” he said. “You have to have impact just alongside Coke and everything else.”

Kolar said Henke was hired for his experience, personality and ability to mentor the shop’s young talent.

Dell, 3M and Del Webb’s Sun City Texas are among the 13-year-old agency’s clients.
