Grooving With Mother

The guys from Mother want to meet you. And what better place to do so than in (their words) “a dark, sweaty basement at 159 E. Houston St.”?

Tonight at 9 p.m., at Carnaval, the new New York shop will host the first of hopefully many “Mother Mondays.” From what we can gather from the agency’s somewhat slippery e-mail on the subject, attendees should expect to mingle, enjoy a beverage or two, not talk about advertising, and soak up the stylings of “legendary Norwegian-Cuban trumpeter/pianist” JR III (aka Jon Rekdal)—a sound described as ” ‘sad’ cocktail lounge ‘jazz.’ ”

“We know it’s not really a lounge, and it’s not really ‘sad’ either, but that’s not the point with this evening,” the Mother founders—Andrew Deitchman, Linus Karlsson, Paul Malmstrom and Rob DeFlorio—said jointly in the e-mail. “The point is: It’s a nice basement to have some fun in. Hopefully, this evening will turn into a joyful ‘laughfest’ with good music, nice people and colorful drinks.” They continued, “Everyone is welcome. The only rule is, if you happen to work in the advertising industry, you are not allowed to talk about work.”

The founders called tonight “kind of a focus-group party. If it turns out to be a success, we’ll have a grand-super-opening next Monday. And if that works well too, it will be a long, hot summer.”
