Grey Taps McCarthy

Ending a six-month search, Grey has named Kevin McCarthy executive creative director in San Francisco.

McCarthy, 38, will also serve as chief creative director for Grey Direct, the agency’s direct response division. His last position was partner and chief creative officer at Euro RSCG MVBMS Partners, San Francisco. He was also a co-founder of a.k.a. Euro RSCG here, which eventually merged with MVBMS. McCarthy replaces Alan Randolph, who left the agency for undisclosed reasons.

“I’ve been looking to join a smart team with momentum in this marketplace,” McCarthy said. “This team has a lot going on, and winning Cisco is proof of that,” he added, referring to darkGrey’s victory in the $50-60 million review last month.

McCarthy will supervise 15 creatives and work on all the agency’s accounts, including Oracle and Papa Murphy’s Pizza. He will team with agency president Casey Jones.

Jones said McCarthy is excited about the prospect of improving Grey’s creative reputation in the area. “We took a look at a lot of candidates,” Jones said. “The whole time there were a lot of people saying we should take a look at Kevin. When we met, it was obvious we had the same passion about the business and he wanted to make Grey a creative player.”

Jones also said McCarthy’s experience outside of TV advertising was a draw. “There are few people who are talented enough to be working in all types of marketing, and he’s one of them,” Jones said.

McCarthy has also worked at McCann-Erickson and J. Walter Thompson on such brands as AT&T, Black & Decker, Coca-Cola, Del Monte, Gillette, Kodak and Nestlé.
