Goodbye To All That

TBWA\Chiat\Day bid farewell to a legendary leader a week ago with a grand tribute that mixed equal doses of frivo lity, affection and celebration of a triumphant and unpredictable career.

Several hundred colleagues, friends and family members gathered at the Playa del Rey, Calif., office to celebrate Bob Kuperman, former president and CEO of TBWA Americas, who has returned to DDB. The event, emceed by Rob Rosenthal, featured tributes from Lee Clow (a “Think Kupe” video was a big hit), Tom Carroll, Laurie Coots and others. Of particular note was a Beverly Hillbillies musical parody sung by Pen Pendleton (backed by Joe Feldman on guitar).

Son Jason thanked Dad for everything he taught him, from his drive (“I drew in storyboard form in kindergarten”) to his colorful language (“I was the only kid in the playground who could say, ‘Get off that fucking swing, it’s my fucking turn’ “).

But when Clow referred to Kupe as his hero, it reduced the typically crusty adman—and many in the audience—to tears. “It kind of welled me up,” he admits. “There was a lot of love in the room.” DAN LEVINE/AFP/NEWSCOM
