Frankel Taps Haan as S.F. Chief

Promotions and direct marketing shop Frankel has tapped David Haan to run its 65-person San Francisco office.

Haan, 49, was named president and CEO. He started June 3 and reports to Jim Mack, chairman and CEO of Chicago-based Frankel, a division of Publicis Groupe.

“We were looking for someone who had a total marketing background,” said Mack. “If you look at what we do, which is consumer brand marketing, we needed to find someone from an advertising background who can also do direct marketing and digital marketing. Some people have a strong advertising or promotions background, but broad-based experience was what we were looking for.”

The presidency of Frankel S.F. had been vacant for 18 months. It was last held by Carlton Prince.

Frankel S.F. works with Visa, Dryer’s Ice Cream and Symantec.

Haan spent his early career at such companies as Faygo Beverages and Tupperware Corp. From 1984 to 1998, he worked at Foote, Cone & Belding. His first job at the shop was in the Chicago office, managing the Sunkist Orange business. He also worked on Coors Light and Canada Dry during his six years there.

In 1990, Haan was promoted to evp of client services at FCB Toronto, where he managed the Molson Breweries account and helped win Fujifilm and Stouffer’s. In 1994, he was promoted to president and CEO of FCB Canada, where he worked with the Canadian operations of General Mills, Mazda and Nestlé.

Haan was most recently managing partner and senior client director for Earle Palmer Brown in Philadelphia, where he worked with Manning Floors, DuPont and Blue Cross/Blue Shield.

Haan said it will be a challenge to lead an agency in San Francisco as the city continues to try to pull itself out of a recession. “Growth is always an issue, and it’s everyone’s mantra,” he said. “But I think we have some awfully attractive things going on and a good group of people, so we’re up to the challenge.”

There were also personal reasons for the move. “I’ve got an awful lot of friends in the Bay Area,” Haan said. “And I’ve always had a great fondness for San Francisco.”

The shop also has offices in Southern California and Connecticut.
