First CDs Arise at DDB S.F.

SAN FRANCISCO DDB has promoted four staffers to the newly created position of creative director.

The newly appointed creative directors are Chad Ackley, Mike Andrews, Perry Portugal and Dustin Smith. All previously held the title of art director, except Portugal, 50, who was a copywriter.

“These individuals bring a wealth of talent, experience and infectious enthusiasm to our business and to our clients,” said DDB S.F. managing partner and chief creative officer Lisa Bennett.

Each of the directors will supervise the creative output of several accounts, as well as head key agency initiatives. Ackley, 32, will be responsible for accounts such as Armor All, STP and Tilex. His recent “Denial” campaign positioned Tilex as “The mold killer.”

Andrews, 32, will serve as creative director on Kingsford, KC Masterpiece and Glad, which recently launched a national campaign.

Portugal will oversee Hidden Valley Ranch, Fresh Step, Scoop Away and a number of the Clorox brands. He also will be responsible for Clorox new product initiatives.

Smith, 33, will supervise accounts such as Brita, 409, Pine-Sol and the Oakland Zoo. He will also serve as head of art, a function created to improve the overall print product of the agency.

In addition to overseeing the creative and production departments, Bennett retains creative responsibilities for all of the agency’s ConAgra business won in March 2004, including Banquet, Hunts Snack Pack, Swiss Miss and Van Camp’s. She also continues to partner with Mary Moudry, president of DDB San Francisco, to increase billings through account acquisitions and expanding business with existing clients.

Previously, DDB S.F.’s creative department consisted solely of art directors and copywriters, excluding the CCO position.
