The Food and Drug Administration said last week it is strengthening its oversight of medical and pharmaceutical advertising. Commissioner Mark McClellan said the FDA intends to “do all we can under the law” to ensure that prescription-drug ads are “as useful as possible.” Draft guidelines issued last week propose alternatives to the lengthy summaries of risk information in consumer print ads and advise manufacturers how to comply with risk-disclosure rules for broadcast ads.
