Fallon Wins Vanguard

CHICAGO Vanguard Car Rental, parent company of National Car Rental and Alamo Rent A Car, said it has awarded creative and media duties on its advertising account to Publicis Groupe’s Fallon.

Estimated billings are $20 million.

The Minneapolis shop won the account after a review that included WPP Group’s Young & Rubicam and Omnicom Group’s Element 79, both in Chicago.

The contenders were invited to pitch the account by Jerry Dow, who joined the Tulsa, Okla., company from Fallon client United Airlines last April. Though the account win is for both Alamo and National, the review assignment centered on the latter brand, which primarily serves business travelers.

“They just really nailed the assignment,” Dow said. “They did a good job of bringing alive some differentiation of what the National brand can bring to the market.”

Vanguard’s incumbent, DG&A in Los Angeles, was not invited to pitch the business. Vanguard spent $20 million on advertising last year, according to Nielsen Monitor-Plus.
