Euro RSCG N.Y. Has Layoffs

NEW YORK Euro RSCG has cut nearly 2 percent of its staff in New York, or roughly nine positions, the Havas agency acknowledged today.

The shop called the cuts a prudent business practice amid the economic downturn. “Any responsible agency is keeping a sharp eye on costs in this environment,” said an agency representative.

The office’s top clients include Reckitt Benckiser, Exxon Mobil, Jaguar, Charles Schwab and Kraft Foods.

Sources said the layoffs spanned several disciplines and included executive creative director Jeff Bitsack, a former JWT ecd who in July was hired along with Con Williamson to run Euro RSGG’s creative department here.

Williamson, also an ecd and former JWT exec, remains at the agency, albeit with a different title: chief creative officer. A Euro RSCG representative declined to discuss specific cuts.

The cuts come in the wake of two high-level executives leaving the agency: North American CEO Esther Lee and North American chief creative officer Jose Cabaco.

Cabaco left last month, seven months after Lee recruited him from independent Wieden + Kennedy in Portland, Ore. Lee exited in September, after just 15 months at the shop. Before Euro RSCG, Lee was worldwide chief creative officer at Coca-Cola in Atlanta, where she spent five years. The North American CEO and CCO roles were new and the agency does not plan to fill either one.
