In what has become an annual event, cable operators were again slinging epithets at ESPN last week for increasing carriage rates 20 percent for the third year in a row.

“Should I just turn on the spigot and let my frustration flow?” asked Italia Commissoweinand, senior vice president of programming/human resources for the 1.6 million-subscriber Mediacom, when asked about the rate hikes. Compounded over the last three years, ESPN’s rates have risen more than70 percent, and operators are paying significantly more for ESPN than for other networks, at an estimated cost of $1.45
