eMarketer: Social Nets Are Habit Forming

Social networking sites have yet to find reliable revenue streams, but there’s still time to solve that equation, with eMarketer projecting traffic increases for the next several years.

The number of U.S. Internet users that visited social networks at least once a month increased an estimated 11 percent in 2008 to 79.5 million, and will rise nearly 11 percent in 2009 to 88.1 million, according to data provided by eMarketer.

Between 2008-13, the number of U.S. social net users will increase about 44 percent to nearly 115 million, eMarketer said.

The steady streams of updates and news will become a weekly or daily habit for many people.

That traction is good news for social networks, which continue to struggle to develop workable ad models. Not only are more consumers joining social networks, their level of involvement will deepen.
