Edelman Picks Up Pharmaceutical, High-Tech Wins

BOSTON Edelman Public Relations has been tapped for PR chores by pharmaceutical giant AstraZeneca and digital video equipment maker InFocus.

The independent agency won communications chores for four different AstraZeneca brands in separate reviews, according to Susan Isenberg, executive director of Edelman’s health practice in New York. The drugs include schizophrenia treatment Seroquel; Toprol-XL, a beta blocker to treat hypertension, angina and heart failure; Atacand, another hypertension drug; and anticoagulant Exanta.

Work will include various public relations, public affairs and medical assignments throughout the U.S., Europe and Asia, according to Isenberg; this may include collaboration with the client’s advertising and other marketing agencies on these drugs. Work will be led by the agency’s New York office, in partnership with its locations in Washington and Chicago. Fees were not disclosed.

The wins expand Edelman’s relationship with the London-based client, which was formed in 1999 when Zeneca bought Astra of Sweden. Since 1999, Edelman has handled PR duties for cholesterol treatment Crestor and Galida, a Type 2 diabetes drug currently in development. The additional wins place AstraZeneca in the top 10 of Edelman’s largest clients worldwide, according Isenberg. “The fact that we were selected for these four drugs really solidifies our relationship with Astra,” Isenberg said.

Other healthcare clients for the agency include Pfizer, Johnson & Johnson and Abbott Laboratories.

Separately, Edelman picked up chores for InFocus, a Wilsonville, Ore.-based maker of digital projection equipment. The agency’s Portland, Ore., office, which won the business following a review, will promote the client’s projectors, services and technologies for the business, government, education and home entertainment markets.

Edelman’s global integration campaign will involve PR efforts in the U.S., Asia, Europe and Latin America. Work will include product launches supported by media relations campaigns targeting consumer and trade publications, according to Edelman svp Steve Burkhart. Edelman will work in conjunction with InFocus’ ad agency, Interpublic Group’s McCann-Erickson in San Francisco.

The win represents the latest for the agency’s newest office, which opened last September. Other Edelman clients in Portland include Adidas, Microsoft, Kaiser-Permanente, AlloyRed and the Internet Law and Policy Forum.
