LITTLETON, Colo. — EchoStar Communications Corp. posted a narrower-than-expected net loss in the fourth quarter, buoyed by record-setting customer growth for its DISH satellite-television service.

The satellite-TV provider Tuesday reported a net loss of $172.3 million, or 36 cents a share, compared with a year-earlier loss of $220 million, or 48 cents a share. Revenue grew 56% to $805.4 million from $514.9 million.

Analysts had expected a loss of 37 cents a share, according to a survey by First Call/Thomson Financial.
