Duck Head Apparel Makes Room for Ramey

ATLANTA A fifth finalist has edged its way into Duck Head Apparel Company’s agency review.

Jackson Gardner, president of The Ramey Agency, said he sent a letter to Robert Goodfriend, the clothier’s chairman and chief executive officer, asking to be included after reading an account of the review on this Web site.

“I’ll be damned if they didn’t call in two days and say we’d like you to be in the finals,” said Gardner.

The Ridgeland, Miss., shop pitched a music-based creative concept on Oct. 10, along with presentations by finalists BaylessCronin in Atlanta; Doe-Anderson in Louisville, Ky.; The Buntin Group in Nashville, Tenn.; and Birmingham, Ala.’s Lawler Ballard van Durand.

A decision is now expected in November. The client could not be reached for comment.

Duck Head of Winder, Ga., is a unit of Goody’s Family Clothing of Knoxville, Tenn.

Billings are undetermined. Client vice president of marketing John Wise said he is looking for ideas to refresh the moribund brand.

Goody’s has committed to a $40-60 million rollout of new products in 2004 that will introduce children’s and girls’ apparel as well as women’s plus sizes.

In 2002, Goody’s spent $17 million on advertising, per Nielsen Monitor-Plus.
